Germany off to a flying start in Euro 2024
Hosts thrash Hungary 5-1 in Budapest
Goal from Gundogan, Havertz, Goretzka, Hofmann and Musiala
Germany got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a flying start with a comfortable 5-1 win over Hungary in Budapest. Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, before Kai Havertz doubled their lead shortly after. Leon Goretzka then made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute, before Jonas Hofmann added a fourth just before half-time.
Germany continued to dominate in the second half, with Jamal Musiala scoring the fifth goal in the 70th minute. Hungary pulled one back through Dominik Szoboszlai in the 86th minute, but it was too little too late for the hosts.
The win was the biggest opening-game victory in the history of the Euros. It also extended Germany's unbeaten run in competitive matches to 15 games.
Germany will now face Portugal in their next Group F match on Saturday, while Hungary will take on France.
